New businesses open on the Livernois Avenue of Fashion

DETROIT – Construction along Livernois Avenue has put a huge squeeze on businesses in Detroit, but one area is experiencing growth.

There’s another new business opening on the Livernois Avenue of Fashion.

“Skin Bar VII is a dream come true,” said Sevyn Jones, the owner of Skin Bar VII.

Jones is a winner of the Motor City Match and is the founder of the skin care company.

“It’s important for the citizens of Detroit to not have to travel outside of the city to get high-end services,” Jones said.

Skin Bar VII is in tip-top shape on the inside, a stark contrast to the Streetscape Project construction outside.

“Sometimes if people are driving by, they may think that you’re not open,” Jones said.

Which is why her neighbor, Happy To Be Nappy, has a big sign in their window.

“There’s so many trucks and construction that people don’t know that we’re open,” said Happy To Be Nappy employee Starr.

Though it’s been tough, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said the project has a purpose.

"What we believed we were doing was investing in the traditional black commercial corridor, the Avenue of Fashion,” Duggan said.

By the end of November, the roadway and on-street parking will be done with just a few more things to finish in the spring.

“I’ll be glad when it’s over," Jones said. "But I’m definitely all for change.”
