Neighbors describe chaotic scene after 2 Detroit police officers shot

1 officer killed

DETROITMORE: Detroit police officer killed in shooting, another injured

An 18-year veteran of the force died from a gunshot wound suffered when a man opened fire on officers. The officers were responding to a home invasion call at a house in the area of Wyoming Avenue and of 8 Mile Road.

Another officer, who has been with the department for three years, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. That officer is in temporary serious condition.

Neighbors said they heard gunfire and looked outside to see a massive police presence.

“(I’ve) ever seen that many police coming up the street from Wyoming, Kentucky, Indiana, telling people to get in your house and shut your door and telling people in their cars to go home,” Stevetta Johnson said.

In the chaos of police searching for the shooter, a car crash happened at the intersection of Wyoming and Chippewa avenues. A tow truck driver who responded to the crash witnessed the shooter being taken into custody.

“He was bleeding,” the tow truck driver said. “Bleeding from armpit and they cut his shirt off and he looked like he had been in a fight.”

The shooter was struck when officers returned fire on him. He is in temporary serious condition at a local hospital.
