Juwan Howard ousted as Michigan basketball coach

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Juwan Howard, the man who has led the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team for five years, will not return for the 2024-25 season.

University of Michigan Athletic Director Wade Manuel announced the team would experience a leadership change next season.

“After a comprehensive review of the program, I have decided that Juwan will not return as our men’s basketball coach,” said Manuel. “Juwan is among the greatest Wolverines to ever be associated with our basketball program. I know how much it meant, to not only Juwan, but to all of us for him to return here to lead this program.”

Manuel said the basketball program was not living up to U-M’s expectations, despite the “positive experience that our student-athletes had under his leadership.”

The school has already begun a national search for a replacement.

“I am thankful for Juwan’s dedication, passion and commitment to U-M and for all that he, and his legacy, will continue to mean to Michigan,” Manuel said.

In 2021, Howard was named as both the Associated Press National Coach of the Year and the Big Ten’s Coach of the Year. But the 2023-2024 season was a huge disappointment, finishing with an 8-24 record at the bottom of the Big Ten.
