Former Detroit Lions defensive back Cam Sutton turned himself in to Florida authorities on Sunday, nearly a month after an arrest warrant was issued for a domestic battery charge.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said Sutton, 29, was taken into custody after turning himself in to the Orient Road Jail in Tampa on Sunday night.

“After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to heal from this man’s gruesome actions.”
A warrant for his arrest connected to a domestic battery by strangulation charge was issued on March 7, but authorities had been unable to reach Sutton. They posted his image on social media two weeks later, asking him to turn contact them to face charges.
Last week, Detroit Lions president Rod Wood said Sutton was in the building in Allen Park when police posted his warrant on social media. He said they talked to Sutton and suggested he get legal counsel and turn himself in to face charges.
“After that we met the rest of the day and the following morning decided to release him,” Wood said. “It was a difficult decision but was the right decision and we’re moving on.”
The Lions signed Sutton to a $33 million, three-year contract a little more than a year ago, targeting him as a key player to acquire last offseason. Sutton started in all 17 regular season games, making a career-high 65 tackles and one interception, and in each of Detroit’s three playoff games.
