Child drowns in standing water on top of pool cover

WARREN, Mich. – A 22-month-old boy drowned Monday afternoon in Warren after falling in a pool, according to police.

The child fell into the above-ground pool that was still covered at about 2 p.m. in the 13000 block of La Chene Avenue. Police said the child was behind the home near the pool, which had a winter cover on it.

Police said the boy got out onto the deck behind his house and wandered into the pool.

The child drowned in the standing water that had accumulated on top of the cover.

Police said the boy's mother realized he wasn't around, found him in the pool and called 911. The boy was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police at the scene said the family is at the police department.

Neighbors and family friends said they are shocked and heartbroken by the incident.

Police are saying it's "nothing but a terrible accident."
