DETROIT – Brenda Jones is the Detroit City Council's new president.
Jones won the position during an internal election between the nine-member council on Monday. She now takes over for interim president Saunteel Jenkins, who was elected at-large in November when Charles Pugh suddenly left.
Jones will serve for four years.
Detroit city council president Pro-Tem is George Cushingberry Jr.
Pugh disappeared just before allegations surfaced last summer that he had an inappropriate relationship with a high school student he mentored.
He stopped showing up to council meetings and hasn't been seen in Detroit since.
Then-President pro tem Gary Brown stepped down to take a job with Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr's staff.
