DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. – A Crestwood High School student has been charged after being arrested Monday with a loaded gun.
Robert Lee-Curtis Perkins has been arraigned on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a weapon in a weapon free school zone and felony firearm.
Crestwood Schools Superintendent Dr. Laurine Vanvalkenburg told Local 4 the 19-year-old student did have the gun on school property but didn't make any threats.
"He lifted his shirt and showed the gun to another student and that student reported him to the administration," she said. "He did the right thing. He protected every student and every staff member in this building because at that time we could not predict what the student with the gun intended to do with it."
The school was briefly put on lockdown while authorities search for the student.
"Big guys walked in with big guns and everything. Yeah, it was kind of frightening," said student Ahmad Hachen.
Other students said the arrested teen had played on the basketball team.
"He was a nice guy. He never hurt anybody, he never got into any fights," said Chafeek Hehme.
He was later found at the Caroline Kennedy Library, where he was scheduled to meet with a teacher as part of an alternative education class.
