Family grieves 27-year-old woman found murdered in Van Buren Township home

Mystery surrounds Egypt Covington's death

BELLEVILLE, Mich. – Community members and family members of 27-year-old Egypt Covington are grieving after she was found murdered in her home Friday night.

Officers from the Van Buren Township Police Department said a friend who stopped by to visit Egypt found her deceased at around 7 p.m. Friday.

Egypt was a very talented woman who could sing and play guitar, and had a captivating personality.

"Egypt was an angel walking on Earth. She spread light and love and caring and was a freaking example of light, love and talent," said Chuck Covington, the victim's father.

Her stepmother, Kristin Covington, describes her as a person who accepted everyone and never gossiped.

"I think what I want people to remember about her is she didn't look at the outside of a person. She didn't care how much money you had. She cared about what was inside," she said.

When they found out she was killed in her home, they said they felt "disbelief, shock and hysteria."

Egypt worked as a bartender at Fraser's Pub in Ann Arbor and was an account manager. Community members gathered at the pub to grieve. The pub is planning a memorial service for her Saturday because her father said Egypt always said she "didn't want to be put in the dirt," and wanted a celebration of life if she passed away.

"She was goodliness and godliness everywhere she went. She shouldn't be taken from us," Chuck Covington said.

The police department is not releasing how Egypt was killed, but believe it was an act committed by someone she knew. They haven't made any arrests, and everyone they've spoken to has come to the police department voluntarily to share information.

Authorities said this is a case that "won't be solved overnight" because they are looking into evidence, some of which has been sent to Michigan State Police.

The family is hoping someone comes forward with information, and urges people to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP.

"It won't cure her being gone, but she would want the person caught," Chuck said.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page, which you can visit here.
