Former colleagues defend Rep. John Conyers amid sexual harassment claims

Conyers still hospitalized due to stress, staff says

DETROIT – Michigan Rep. John Conyers remains in the hospital Friday suffering from stress, according to his staff.

Top Democrats are calling for Conyers' resignation in light of sexual harassment claims, but he's also receiving support from some of his colleagues.

"I worked for Congressman Conyers, 2006 to 2016 in his Detroit office, as a congressional aid," Shawn Campbell said in a notarized statement. "I know Marion Brown very well, and she was employed at the time I was employed. She never expressed to me or to anyone to my knowledge that she was harassed in any fashion. In fact, she requested that the congressman hire her daughter. The congressman did hire her daughter. The congressman was very concerned about women's rights, and he fired me for cursing at one of his female constituents who called in for help."

Former Conyers employee Marion Brown said she was paid $27,000 after she complained that Conyers was harassing her.

"He's just violated my body," Brown said on the "Today Show." "He has touched me in different ways, and it was very uncomfortable and very unprofessional."

Another former employee, who said he worked as a security guard with Conyers and Brown, sent a notarized statement to Conyers' attorney, Arnold Reed.

"I have been watching the media coverage regarding congressman John Conyers," James Marbury said. "I am deeply concerned and feel compelled to come forward and tell you that I worked as a security guard under federal contract through Homeland Security. My duties included perimeter security, building security and access points into the federal courthouse. I performed these duties from roughly 2000-2008. In this capacity, I observed the interaction on numerous occasions between Congressman Conyers and Marion Brown. I also talked with Ms. Brown on numerous occasions, and she knew that I was security. In this time period, she never appeared to be uncomfortable around Congressman Conyers, and in fact, appeared to have a good professional working relationship with Congressman Conyers. Ms. Brown never appeared uncomfortable in his office space or anywhere throughout the building. I am not an interested party in this issue, but I wanted to share my observations in light of what was said about the congressman by Ms. Brown. I have observed Congressman Conyers to be professional and have never witnessed him speaking in a manner what was unprofessional to any of his staff."

Not long after Brown's interview, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said it was time for Conyers to end his long career.

"The brave women who came forward are owed justice," Pelosi said. "I pray for Congressman Conyers and his family. I wish them well, however, Congressman Conyers should resign."

That thought was met with opposition from Reed.

"Nancy Pelosi did not elect the congressman, and sure sure as hell won't be the one to tell the congressman to leave," Reed said.

Sources are telling Local 4 that Conyers is not resigning, but that he doesn't plan to run for another term in office.

In the meantime, the public hasn't heard from Conyers more than a week since the allegations came to light.

"We've heard a lot from an attorney," public relations specialist Matt Friedman said. "We heard from a spokesperson today. We have not heard from the individual who's been elected to represent half of the city of Detroit. I think, from a PR perspective, that's problematic."

Sources told Local 4 that Conyers will make the announcement about not running for re-election in January.

Reed is expected to hold a press conference Friday. Stay with ClickOnDetroit for updates.
