Detroit father seriously injured after drag racing vehicles crash into his car, family says

Parked car was struck by vehicle going at least 80mph, family says

DETROIT – A father in Detroit was seriously injured and requires several surgeries after a speeding car struck his vehicle.

The family said the collision happened at the intersection of McGraw Avenue and Tarnow Street. They said he was sitting in his car and was about to get something to eat when the people speed racing lost control.

“He was going to Detroit to actually take a part to his friend’s house, so he can fix his car. He stopped for some food,” said Ariel Resto Jr.

Resto said the crash happened at about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

“As he was parked, I guess two people that were racing -- they said it was a truck and a Fusion -- were speeding down the street and they tried cutting each other off and they collided into my dad,” Resto said. “They crashed into the passenger side which made him fly from the driver to the passenger side and they pushed his car about 10-15 feet.”

Resto said he got the call while he was at work.

“Usually anytime when she calls my job, it’s either good news or bad news,” Resto said. “I had a feeling it was going to be bad news and when I answered the phone and she heard my voice, she started crying.”

His father is now in the hospital with serious injuries.

“They found out he had eight broken ribs. His hip is broken in three different sections. His actual pelvis bone came out of his back from the impact,” Resto said. “His leg is broken into three different places. His ankle is broken as well. His liver has a tear and his spleen has a tear. Also the main artery connected to his heart has internal bleeding.”

He said doctors will have to do more surgeries, and they’re saying he’s lucky to be alive.

A GoFundMe has been set up for the family to help with the medical bills. You can donate here.
