Officials said a 34-year-old man had assaulted his mother, who fled from the home while he stayed inside with a female friend.
Police learned the man was armed with a handgun, and when they arrived, they said they heard gunshots from inside the house.
Officers set up a perimeter and tried to speak with the man over the phone, but they were unsuccessful. Over the next several hours, police repeatedly tried to contact him, they said.
Authorities said they heard another gunshot inside the house during that time.
Around 9 a.m., the man’s friend got out of the home. She told police she was able to escape because the man had been drinking heavily and passed out, according to authorities.
Neither the mother nor the friend had been shot, officials said.
Oakland County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team members arrived and took up the inner perimeter while Waterford Township police continued to secure the outer perimeter, authorities said.
SWAT team members approached the house and got in contact with the man, who exited through the front door after some negotiation, according to police. He was taken into custody without incident.
The man is currently on parole, police said. A handgun was recovered inside the house.
Waterford Township detectives are investigating the case.
During the standoff, the nearby Momentum Academy was put on lockdown for a time, and residents on Lakeview Street were asked to shelter in place.
