3-year-old Westland boy shoots himself in hand after finding mother’s gun

Officials say boy found mother’s unsecured firearm

WESTLAND, Mich. – A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the hand overnight after finding his mother’s gun in Westland, police said.

The incident happened around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday (June 9) in the 29000 block of Powers Street, according to Westland police.

Investigators said the boy found his mother’s unsecured firearm and accidentally fired it, injuring his hand.

Police seized the firearm, and they continue to investigate.

The boy is being treated at Mott Children’s Hospital.
