DETROIT – A 1-year-old child is back with his mother after being in the backseat of a vehicle when it was stolen in Detroit.
The child’s mother left the car running in the area of 7 Mile and Greenfield roads on Detroit’s west side while she went into a hair salon to quickly check on a loved one.

A thief stole her car with the child inside. After driving a couple of blocks, the thief let the child out of the car and fled the scene. Someone found the child alone near a busy street and found his mother.
“He said he knew that that kid belonged to that lady,” Lt. Clive Stewart with Detroit police said. “He saw the guy jump inside of the car, followed then, next thing he knew as he went around the corner to see what they were doing -- there was a child standing there.”
The good Samaritan picked up the child and returned him to his mother. The child was only missing for about three minutes.
“He came running up the street with my baby,” the mother said. “I’m so happy because I thought something had happened to my kid. I was just happy that he’s OK.”
About four miles away, police found some items that were inside the car including the base of the car seat dumped behind an apartment complex.
The vehicle is a blue 2019 Hyundai Accent with Michigan plate No. EGA4759. Police said three suspects are in custody but the vehicle is still missing.
