Duo pretends to be from water department to get into Farmington Hills home, steal items

One man distracted homeowners while other stole items, officials say

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich.Farmington Hills police are searching for two men who pretended to be from the water department to get into a family’s home and steal items from inside.

The incident happened at 3:52 p.m. March 28 at a home in the area of 9 Mile and Drake roads in Farmington Hills.

Officials said two men knocked on the door of a house and told the homeowners that they worked for the water department. The men claimed they needed to check the water inside the home, according to authorities.

One of the men distracted the homeowners while the other stole items from inside, police said.

Both men were White and around 30 years old, authorities said. They were about 5 feet, 8 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches in height, they said. One of the men was wearing a green safety vest and a brown baseball hat.

They were seen in a silver, newer model SUV with a white magnetic placard on the driver’s side door, according to officials.

Farmington Hills police Chief Jeff King issued a reminder to residents not to allow anyone into their home if they arrive unexpectedly or present suspicious information.
