Local churches thankful to celebrate Palm Sunday with in-person services

Those in the Christian faith on Sunday celebrated Palm Sunday, the first time in years services on Palm Sunday were held in person because of the pandemic.

Being together on the holy day meant even more to those worshiping.

“Two years, three years, it’s wonderful,” said Barbara Carbin. “It’s wonderful.”

Hope Methodist Church in Southfield was one of the hundreds of churches hosting in-person services again.

Those at the church said the pandemic taught them strength, resilience and to be open to change. They didn’t have a choice when churches closed down.

Hope Methodist Church reopened in January.

“Well, I feel great,” Rev. Betty Whitely said. “The doors are open. The blessings of God are in front of us.”

Hopefully, the small uptick in COVID cases will be short-lived so services such as this can return to their pre-pandemic state.

“I find joy,” said Zenaida Wright. “Even though we can’t see the whole face, good to look in the eyes of the people and have us share joy together.”
