PETERSBURG, Mich. – A 12-year-old boy was killed overnight when a garage caught fire in Monroe County, and his father and brother were burned while trying to rescue him, officials said.

Deputies and firefighters were called around 1:30 a.m. Monday (June 20) to a home in the 100 block of West Walnut Street in Petersburg.

Summerfield Township firefighters said when they arrived at the home, an unattached garage was fully engulfed in flames, and family members were trying to rescue Malaki Christian Giles, a 12-year-old boy who was believed to be trapped inside.

Firefighters got into the garage and found Giles dead in the bathroom, they said.

He was a student at Summerfield Schools.

Officials said Giles’ 37-year-old father and 13-year-old brother were burned while trying to rescue him. They were taken to a Toledo hospital for treatment and later released, according to authorities.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau at 734-240-7530.
