Metro Detroit moms connect WIC recipients with formula

Stores getting the most significant shipments of formula don’t accept WIC benefits

DETROIT – A group of Metro Detroit moms continues to help families as the baby formula crisis continues.

They have spent weeks helping families find formula, and now they’re doing it for one group that’s running into a unique problem.

“Abbott in Sturgis, Michigan had to pause production because of flooding,” said Detroit Area Formula Finder group member Heather Chesnutt. “So while it’s not as much as it’s not in the news cycle anymore, it is very relevant still for a lot of our families and caregivers in the group.”

Chesnutt’s Facebook group continues to grow in size, and it continues to have people go out and search for formula and help connect that formula to families who desperately need it.

The stores getting the most significant shipments of formula don’t accept WIC benefits.

“You can’t use WIC benefits online,” Chesnutt said. “So if something comes in online on Amazon, families that aren’t using that can quickly take advantage of those that use WIC benefits or not. And there’s a very big population that are using WIC benefits too.

Chesnutt’s group will go out and buy needed formula for WIC families from places that don’t accept the benefits, and the list of families is only getting longer.

“It is so heartwarming when you see somebody say, ‘I don’t know what I would’ve done without this group,’” Chesnutt said. “‘I was on my last can, and I had no options. I don’t know what I would’ve done without your team jumping in and helping me find it.”
