Police say drunk driver crashes into cars, injuring multiple people at 2 intersections in St. Clair Shores

Officials say one person is in custody

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – Police say a drunk driver caused a series of crashes at two busy intersections in St. Clair Shores.

Witnesses say they saw the chaos unfold on 10 Mile Road and Jefferson Avenue and then again at 10 Mile road and Harper Avenue.

Local 4 spoke with police, and the sergeant said they’re still sorting everything out and aren’t releasing any information at the moment.

“All of it was happening in front of me,” said witness Frank Dionisopoulos. “It was like I was watching a movie. I had no reaction, not even to jump out of the way.”

Dionisopoulos says he witnessed a series of crashes caused by one driver, who sources say appeared to be under the influence.

“The lights was red,” Dionisopoulos said. “So he hits the car and goes around, goes through the lights, runs over the stop sign, cuts across and hits two more cars. He then goes across the sidewalk and starts going down 10 Mile.”

Witnesses said another driver who saw the crashes chased after the driver.

“His front end was kind of banged up,” said Joyce Wright, who was dining on the patio at Sabby’s Lounge.

She told Local 4 that she heard the black SUV coming before another series of accidents unfolded before her eyes.

“He ran the red light, hit one car, it spun, hit a truck, and then he hit two more cars,” Wright said.

Wright says an elderly couple that was in one of the cars seen in the video player above had to be transported to the hospital.

Officials say there were injuries up the road near Pegasus Taverna, too.

Once the shock of it all wore off, Dionisopoulos said he ran to check on the people that were hit.

“They were in shock,” Dionisopoulous said. “One lady couldn’t even move.”

Officials say some of the people involved in that incident were also transported to the hospital.

Dionisopoulous says his thoughts are with those who were injured and on the driver who caused the chaos.

“He didn’t even look back once to see if he hurt anybody,” Dionisopoulous said. “He was just concentrating on getting out of there. It was scary to see people like that on the road.”

Local 4 reached out to the St. Clair Shores Police Department, and they confirmed that they have one person in custody, but they would not release any additional details about the chain of events or the injured people.

The other driver who chased down the drunk driver was also involved in one of the accidents as well.
