TAYLOR, Mich. – A dramatic scene unfolded Thursday night in Taylor where an out-of-control SUV carrying two children in the backseat slammed into a home.
You can see some of the damage that was left behind in the video player above.
Dianna Battistone was on the back porch of the Taylor home when the SUV came barreling all the way through to the inside.
“First, I heard tires squealing and breaks screeching,” said Battistone. “I went to get up to see what it was, and I heard the big boom like an explosion. I looked and saw the side of the house out, and then I heard screaming.”
That screaming was coming from the two little girls that were in the back seat.
“They were very, very scared and kind of in shock,” Battistone said. “They just wanted to get out of the car.”
Battistone and a bystander opened the trunk of the SUV, and the girls climbed out.
They then turned their attention to the driver, who was the mother of one of the girls.
“She was awake, but it wasn’t like she could respond to us,” Battistone said. “I did tell her the girls are ok just in case she could understand that. I didn’t want her wondering about that.”
Police say they believe the woman had a medical emergency at the time of the crash.
“An accident of this significance, typically you see a lot worse injuries,” said Taylor police Corporal Billy Shillingburg. “Very fortunate that everyone is stable.”
Battistone also feels fortunate that she and her family weren’t there when the SUV hit the home.
“I’m glad nobody was in (the home) because sometimes the grandkids come over.”
The owners of the home said they are waiting on a response from the insurance company to find out if the house could be saved or not.
