First phase of Detroit applications for recreational marijuana licenses now open for businesses

DETROIT – The first phase of recreational marijuana license applications has opened for adult-use retailers, microbusinesses and designated consumption establishments.

There are a total of 160 licenses over three phases. During this first phase, 60 licenses will be awarded. These applications will close at 8 a.m. on Oct. 1, 2022.

Out of the 60 licenses, 40 will be for retail, 10 for micro-businesses and 10 for consumption lounges. According to city officials, the micro-businesses will be allowed to grow and process up to 150 plants and sell the resulting products for recreational purposes.

To qualify for the application, you must be a resident of Detroit or another community that is determined to be disproportionately impacted by the prohibition of marijuana. Officials state that half of the licenses will be issued to social equity applicants.

“Tomorrow is a very exciting day for our city. It will be the first day that people will be able to apply for a recreational marijuana license and we are going to make sure there is equity in this process for Detroiters,” said Mayor Mike Duggan.
