NEW BALTIMORE, Mich. – The man accused of murdering a WWJ radio anchor and hurting three others in an attempted murder-suicide in Macomb County was arraigned Monday afternoon.

Officials said Arthur Levan Williamson, 55, used a hammer to kill Jim Nicolai, a 57-year-old man who went by the name Jim Matthews while working as an overnight news anchor on WWJ 950.

The attack happened around noon Friday (Sept. 23) at Nicolai’s home in the 33000 block of Bayview Drive, in the area of Jefferson Avenue and Hooker Road in Chesterfield Township.

Nicolai’s 35-year-old girlfriend and their two children -- a 10-year-old son and a 5-year-old daughter -- were also injured, according to authorities.

Williamson was arraigned Monday afternoon at 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore. Bond was denied.

“There will be no bond set, no bail set today, sir,” Judge Joseph J. Plawecki said.

Plawecki said Williamson is facing seven felony charges, including a premeditated felony homicide and a felony homicide charge.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 5. A preliminary examination is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 12.

“Both prosecutor and defense may at the next hearing, at the probable cause conference, may appeal my particular bond ruling to the judge,” Plawecki said.
