Detroit cleans up illegal dumping site that contained abandoned vehicles, houses

DETROIT – A lot on Detroit’s west side is getting cleaned up after a video shows the illegal dumping issues going on in that neighborhood.

The lot is off Grandview Street south of 8 Mile Road and on Tuesday the city responded to the mess that was left in front of an abandoned home.

A stolen car, SUV and an abandoned van were towed along with an abandoned home boarded up after a squatting issue was resolved.

Chelsea Sylvester, a mom in the neighborhood, showed Local 4 the mess after her daughter’s video caught our attention.

“Well, my concern is that the kids over here, you know, everyone over here has kids,” said Sylvester.

Another neighbor expressed her opinions on the illegal dumping going on in her neighborhood.

“We have a nice neighborhood, we have a very nice block. And it’s ridiculous that we have to live with these conditions where people are coming over from everywhere else and dumping their trash,” said Alicia Johnson, a resident of the neighborhood.

According to Detroit officials, one of the houses is on a pipeline and is scheduled to be demolished. Officials encourage residents to continue using the Improve Detroit app to report issues similar to this one. Click here to download the app.
