MILAN, Mich. – An inmate at a Washtenaw County prison has been sentenced to more time behind bars after a “rampage” that left one fellow inmate dead and three others seriously injured.
Jason Dale Kechego, 41, of Detroit, was one of three men accused of murdering Christian Maire on Jan. 2, 2019, inside the Milan Correctional Facility on Arkona Road in Milan.

Officials said Kechego and Adam Taylor Wright, 42, repeatedly kicked and stomped Maire in the head. Maire was also stabbed 28 times by Alex Albert Castro, 42, while Wright prevented corrections officers from intervening, authorities said.
The trio is accused of throwing Maire’s body down a flight of stairs and celebrating his death.
Maire was ultimately pronounced dead from stab wounds and blunt force trauma to the head.
Officials said the three men assaulted and seriously injured three other inmates during their “rampage.”
Sentencing
Kechego was convicted of second-degree murder after a jury trial.
He was sentenced Tuesday (Nov. 8) to 28 years in prison. That sentence will run consecutively to the 10-year sentence he’s already serving for possession of a stolen firearm.
“We are committed to protecting the public, prisoners, and correctional staff from dangerous people like Jason Kechego,” United States Attorney Dawn Ison said. “This lengthy additional sentence will not only keep him off the streets for decades, but also sends a message that we will hold individuals accountable for the crimes they commit both inside and outside of prison walls.”
“The safety and security of employees and inmates are undermined whenever a violent act occurs in federal prison,” said James A. Tarasca, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Detroit field office. “The length of Mr. Kechego’s sentence is a warning to anyone who commits a violent act in prison that they will be held accountable for their crimes.”
Wright sentenced, Castro awaiting trial
Wright pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in February and was sentenced to 292 months (24 years and four months) in prison for his role in the killing.
Castro is currently awaiting trial. It’s scheduled to begin in February 2023.
