EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State University Police and Public Safety Interim Deputy Chief Chris Rozman said during his 12 a.m. update that four people, including the suspect, have died, and five people were injured in the campus shooting at MSU.
Two of the victims that died occurred at Berkey Hall, with another taking place at the MSU Union. The five victims who were injured were transported to the hospital.
Officials located the suspect off campus on Lake Lansing Road and North Larch Street in Lansing. When police arrived, he appeared to have taken his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The suspect was a 43-year-old Black male, shorter in stature, wearing red shoes, a jean jacket, navy baseball cap with a lighter brim.
The shooting started around 8:18 p.m. at Berkey Hall and spread to multiple locations near the Michigan State University campus.
“We received multiple 911 calls of a shooting inside Berkey Hall,” said Michigan State University Police and Public Safety Interim Deputy Chief Chris Rozman during his 11 p.m. update.
The incident moved to a building near the Michigan State Student Union, where there was another shooting report immediately following the first incident.
Police and emergency responders tended to victims at both scenes.
“I can confirm that there were at least five victims,” Rozman said. “All five victims were transported to the hospital. Some of those victims do have life-threatening injuries.”
Community members on and off campus were told to sheltered in place.
“For people off campus, please do not come to campus,” Rozman said. “I can’t say that enough. For parents, we understand — I can only imagine the emotion that’s evolved right now. It’s going to help us, and it’s going to help our response, and it’s going to help us identify the shooter, the less people that are on campus at this point. Please do not come to campus.”
Hundreds of police officers and law enforcement officials — state, local, and federal — were at the MSU campus.
All campus activities canceled for next 48 hours — classes, sporting events, all campus-related activities.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued the following statement on the deadly shooting at MSU.
“Our Spartan community and Michiganders across the state are devastated. MSU’s campus is a special place for so many, and it is now the site of another senseless act of gun violence. Parents across Michigan were on pins and needles calling their kids to check in on them and tell them they love them. It doesn’t have to be this way. Certain places are supposed to be about community, learning, or joy—elementary schools and college campuses, movie theaters and dance halls, grocery stores and workplaces. They should not be the sites of bloodshed. This is a uniquely American problem. Too many of us scan rooms for exits when we enter them. We plan who that last text or call would go to. We should not, we cannot, accept living like this. I want to thank the first responders for their swift actions on the ground tonight and the medical professionals who are working to save lives. Spartans will cry and hold each other a little closer. We will mourn the loss of beautiful souls and pray for those fighting for their lives in the hospital.”

Michigan State Police have issued a statement warning friends and family not to drive up to campus in a Tweet.
Please do not go to MSU right now. Yes, its hard to do when you have loved ones on campus or adjacent to the campus. But it is far too dangerous as this armed suspect is moving in the area and police attempt to take them into custody. As always scanner traffic is inaccurate.
