Doorbell camera catches lightning strike that set home on fire in Macomb County

Doorbell camera nearby captured the strike

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – We’ve seen rounds of storms, and it all started with some strong thunderstorms that blew through overnight across Metro Detroit.

A lightning strike landed in Macomb County, sparking a fire. A doorbell camera captured it.

It happened Wednesday (April 5) morning at a home on Arrowhead Lake near 23 Mile and North Avenue in Macomb Township.

Local 4 went behind the home to see the roof that caught fire. It could collapse, and no one can go back inside. There was water and foam damage as well.

The couple that lives in the area says their home is a total loss.

They didn’t want to appear on camera as the situation was an emotional day for them. The couple built the home 10 years ago, and they say it is a total loss due to fire and water damage.

The timing of what happened was remarkable as the wife got home from work at 3 a.m. They both were awake with they heard a lightning strike that they thought was nearby.

A doorbell camera nearby captured the strike as they did not know their home had taken a direct hit until they both heard crackling that sounded more like hail than a storm hitting.

That’s when the owner went downstairs and checked the front of the home, turned around, and the rear of the home was on fire.

The couple got out as fire crews arrived at the scene.
