BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – Governor Gretchen Whitmer put pen to paper to repeal Michigan’s 1931 law banning abortion.
The passage of Proposal 3 made the 1931 law moot, so this was essentially a symbolic moment. The mood was upbeat, but not everyone was celebrating Wednesday (April 5).
Local 4 spoke with two women with different views on the abortion battle. In Birmingham, the repeal of the 1931 law that bans abortion in Michigan with the stroke of the pen, the law is off the books.
In an exclusive sit-down interview before striking down that law, Whitmer says she believes the moment is on the side of reproductive rights, as evidenced by what’s happening around the country.
But striking down the law is felt differently by different women.
Tayor Hale, a rising reality personality and the first Black to win the reality show Big Brother in 2022, says that she was terrified for herself and her peers when Roe v. Wade was struck down and the 1931 law banning abortion in Michigan hung in the wings.
