BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – A Battle Creek man who thought he won a $1,000 Powerball prize actually ended up winning a $100,000 prize, the Michigan Lottery announced on Wednesday.

Jack Rider matched four white balls and the Powerball on the May 13 drawing to win $50,000, which was doubled by Michigan Lottery’s Power Play option.

“I have been playing Powerball and Mega Millions for years, and I usually buy my tickets online,” Rider said. “A few days after the drawing, I logged in to my account and saw a notification that a $100,000 prize was pending. My first thought was that it was a typo and I’d really won $1,000, because I thought there was no way I’d won $100,000.”

When Rider realized it was not an error, he handed his phone to his wife to show her they won. Rider plans to share some of his winnings with his family, and use it to complete some home projects.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” Rider said.

Powerball tickets can be purchased at retailers across the state and on the Michigan Lottery’s website. The Powerball Jackpot was at $750 million as of Wednesday, July 12.
