Youth band ready to bring the ‘Heat’ on Detroit’s east side

The Midwest Battle is set for Saturday, July 15

DETROIT – Motor City Heat’s marching band is getting ready to battle it out with a Chicago band in what’s being called the Midwest Battle.

Detroit youth, who make up Motor City Heat, have been practicing daily ahead of the competition.

“These kids come from all walks of life, and they go to different colleges,” said Joey Donaldson, one of the band’s directors. “In order for them to be a participating member, they have to be a good student, in the band program and academically sound.”

Because of those requirements, many kids who participate often earn music scholarships at colleges and universities nationwide.

Cadence McIver started as a dancer for the group but has since learned to play the snare drum.

“It’s very fun because not only are we practicing together, we’re also building each other up,” said McIver. “It’s one of the best things in the world, and you can have fun and enjoy.”

Dante Scott also plays the snare drum and sees victory in their future.

One band will walk away with bragging rights, but both will have something to be proud of.

“It’s two cities kind of plagued with crime and violence, so what we wanted to do is showcase the positive side of these two cities,” said Scott.

Motor City Heat has raised $1,100, which is enough money to send 60 of the kids’ bandmates to Chicago.

They’re hoping the community will help them make up the rest of their $2,800 goal.
