LIVONIA, Mich. – A nurse in Livonia was killed over the weekend while pushing a patient back to the nursing home after the patient walked out and laid down in the middle of a road, officials said.

UPDATE: Hear what happened from a witness

An elderly patient at Majestic Care walked out of the facility around 9:40 p.m. Sunday, July 23, and laid down in the middle of 5 Mile Road, according to authorities.

Some nurses went out to the road and put the patient in a wheelchair. They were pushing her back to the nursing home when an 80-year-old driver swerved to avoid the wheelchair and struck a 42-year-old nurse from Plymouth, police said.

The nurse was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver who struck the nurse also crashed into two other cars, according to authorities. Police did not say whether anyone else was injured.
