ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Gary Schlack, the sitting Allen Park city council member caught on video tampering with campaign signs in a voters yard, did not offer any apologies Tuesday night.
Instead, Schlack addressed the matter, saying he was “ashamed” and “acted with evil judgment.”
Over the weekend, a Ring Doorbell camera recorded Schlack placing his sign in a yard.
He’s then seen stomping on a mayoral candidate’s sign before removing a sign for a council candidate.
“I’m not making excuses for my actions, I’m asking for forgiveness from my colleagues, the city, my whole family, I’ve embarrassed,” said Schlack.
“I was dumbfounded,” said Robert McLachlan, the campaign manager for Timothy Estheimer.
It was Estheimers’ sign that was taken down.
“He’s honestly shocked that a sitting city council member would lower themselves to this type of activity,” said McLachlan. “His judgement and activity are certainly at question, and I trust the voters will hold him accountable.”
Councilman Felice Lalli called the act despicable and unacceptable, adding that he was “very disappointed with (the) appalling destructive behavior and actions of one of our own who is sitting up here today.”
Lalli called for an internal investigation into the matter.
