DETROIT – Last year, Angel Flewellyn had the idea to make home-cooked meals for a dozen needy people.
In that time, the need has only grown.
“A lot has not changed because we still have more people coming, different faces,” said Flewellyn. “We see different faces every day.”
“Here we are doing over 100 meals a day, multiple times a week to the tune of sometimes over 2,000 meals a month,” said Jonathan Walker, who was a part of the early idea planning phase.
They call themselves “The Sunday Best Crew” and were recently designated a 501c3 status.
Monday (Oct. 23) night, they also provided suitcases, socks, toiletries, and layers to help those who are unhoused and housing insecure.
Mearle Dunlap says he had an apartment when he first started visiting with The Sunday Best Crew. In May, he lost his home and started living on the streets.
“I was out here until August,” said Dunlap, who credits Angel with turning his life around.
The Sunday Best Crew put him up in a hotel and helped him find housing.
It’s just the start of what they hope to do in the future. Now that they’re a non-profit organization, they plan to open a soup kitchen and hope to offer up a space where people can cool off in the summer and warm up in the winter months.
They’re still raising money for a food truck so they can reach more people.
