School officials said Nisbett was struck by a vehicle that crossed into her lane and hit vehicle her head-on. In the days since the collision, Port Huron Northern High School had multiple fundraising events to help support Nisbett and her family.

“Ashley’s impact on her school, students, and the community has been felt since the morning of the accident and she will be deeply missed,” said St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King. “We are working hard with the Prosecutor’s Office at this time to ensure justice is served.”

The other driver was identified by authorities as 45-year-old Justin Simon, a Tennessee resident who had been traveling to hunt. The sheriff’s office said he was initially charged with operating while intoxicated causing incapacitating injury, but since Nisbett’s death, the charge was amended to operating while intoxicated causing death.

He was given a $75,000 bond, no 10%.

Port Huron Northern High School, which canceled classes Wednesday, shared resources online for parents and students to process grief.
