Freighter carrying 20,000 tons of stone runs aground in St. Clair River

MARINE CITY, Mich. – A freighter hauling 20,000 tons of stone ran aground Tuesday, Nov. 7, in the St. Clair River.

According to the United States Coast Guard, the 617-foot American Courage ran aground near Marine City at about 7:20 a.m.

No injuries or pollution have been reported. While the river remained open during the incident, the Coast Guard issued a marine safety broadcast and urged mariners to use caution while traveling through the area.

A tug boat was able to free the freighter at about 7 p.m.

A full investigation into the cause of the grounding is ongoing.
