We tried 2 more popular gas station food spots in Metro Detroit. Here’s how it went

WDIV Insiders share their favorite quick, cheap meals

Let the emails start flying! After another round of our Gas Station Gourmet, I fully expect more of you to send suggestions my way for GSG: Part III. And I can’t wait to try them.

This time around, we got a lot of emails for new places to try all over the area and a few out of the area.

1. Las Cazuelas

I was definitely impressed by the effort they put in arriving at 3 a.m. only to have lines forming at the door by 5 a.m. But what really stood out to me was a local chef I ran into there who told me that it was her go-to place for authentic Mexican food, whether it was breakfast or lunch. Pretty impressive..

2. Taystee’s Burgers

The story behind Taystee’s Burgers is also notable. The founder and CEO, Ali Jawad, got some excellent advice from his grandfather not to copy someone else or open a franchise of some other restaurant but to start your own.

He had a vision to focus on a Subway-style burger joint inside a gas station because that’s what he knows. It led to Jawad landing on the Forbes list of 30 best entrepreneurs under 30 in the world!

He has since opened several locations, including the newest in Taylor, which is owned by one of his first employees at the original store. He now has plans for five more Taystee’s locations around the Metro.

These two phenomenal places combine two errands that always seem to collide: getting gas and grabbing dinner. And needless to say, the food was delicious at both locations!

Even more options

We received hundreds of responses from our Insiders about their favorite gas station foods from our previous story, but we weren’t able to vet them all ourselves. If you’re interested in exploring, here are some of the most popular recommendations we received:

  • Alex’s Market and Grill, located on White Lake Road near Andersonville Road in Clarkston. They offer a variety of deli meats, prepared foods, snacks, pastries and coffee.
  • Goods Krispy Fish & Chicken, located inside Exxon on Trumbull at West Warren Avenue in Detroit. They’re known for their Krispy Krunchy Chicken.
  • Mediterranean Station, located inside a Mobil gas station on South Broadway Street in Lake Orion. Reviewers rave about both their hot and cold options, including their homemade hummus, falafel and salad options.
  • Original Buscemi’s, located inside BP on West University Drive at South Rochester Road in Rochester. Buscemi’s locations can be found around Metro Detroit, but this one is inside a gas station!
