DETROIT – Part of the northbound Lodge Freeway was closed in Detroit early Wednesday morning after a car collided with a semi truck, causing it to spill fuel on the freeway.
A crash between a Saab and a semi truck occurred at around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13 on the northbound Lodge Freeway (M-10) near 8 Mile Road. As of about 6:30 a.m., the semi truck and the Saab were being removed from the scene, but authorities still had a significant amount of spilled fuel to clean up.
It was unclear how long the freeway would be closed for. You can view our real-time traffic map right here.
According to Michigan State Police, the driver of the ‘93 Saab crashed into the semi truck, and then abandoned the vehicle as it blocked the right and center lane on the freeway. The vehicle damage the semi truck’s fuel lank, which leaked about 200 gallons of diesel fuel “across all lanes of the freeway,” officials said.
The semi truck was located on the right shoulder when police arrived at the scene. Officials say the driver of the truck was not injured.
It’s unknown if the driver of the Saab was injured. They were “still on the run” as of 5:30 a.m., police said.
A “hazmat fuel cleanup” was underway on the freeway. Lanes were expected to reopen after the roadway was cleared. Drivers could exit the freeway and use the service drive to get around the closure Wednesday morning.
