General Motors is laying off 1,314 employees at manufacturing plants in Michigan, months after reaching a new labor contract with the United Auto Workers (UAW).
The announcement occurred on Thursday (Dec. 14), and Local 4 was told that 945 employees will be at the automaker’s Orion Assembly Subsystems Plant in Orion Township.

Officials say the Orion Assembly Plant will be converted for battery electric truck production, including the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV, in late 2025. The final production date is scheduled for the week of Dec. 18.
We also received information that the layoff will affect 369 employees at Lansing Grand River Assembly/Stamping and Lansing Regional Stamping.
Officials say Lansing Grand River Assembly informed employees that the plant would adjust staffing levels due to the end of Camaro production. The assembly plant will continue producing the Cadillac CT4 and Cadillac CT5.
GM’s announcement follows the other layoff announcement just weeks ago by Stellantis, affecting over 1,000 Michiganders.
GM says it will offer impacted employees jobs elsewhere in the company.
“The layoff of workers by GM is an outrageous move motivated by corporate greed. These layoffs were announced not only in the middle of the holiday season but also after GM had received hundreds of millions of dollars in state tax incentives and following the ratification of a historic contract for better wages and benefits. To then turn around and layoff workers is an unacceptable betrayal. I urge GM to reverse course and prioritize the primary driver of its business: the workers.”
