Sterling Heights police shoot driver who fled traffic stop in subdivision

Police say driver is in custody at a hospital

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Police shot and injured a man who fled a traffic stop through a Sterling Heights subdivision until reaching a dead-end street.

Sterling Heights police said officers attempted to stop a grey Chrysler 300 at 11:15 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023, on Carbon Drive south of 15 Mile Road for tinted windows and driving without its headlights on. The driver sped away when officers approached the vehicle on foot.

A pursuit bean in the subdivision, and reached speeds up to 60 mph, according to police. The driver fled into a subdivision south of 15 Mile Road where the driver hit a dead end. Police said officers attempted to approach the vehicle on foot, but the driver tried to flee.

Police said one officer shot multiple rounds into the front of the vehicle, striking the suspect multiple times. Officers provided aid to the driver until he could be transported by the Sterling Heights Fire Department to a local hospital. He was last listed in stable condition and is in police custody at the hospital.

One officer was treated at an area hospital for minor injuries and has since been released. No other injuries were reported.

Police said they later learned the vehicle had been stolen out of Detroit. As per protocol, Michigan State Police are now investigating the shooting.
