What’s Going Around: Respiratory illnesses, RSV, strep throat

Here’s our weekly round-up of what illnesses are spreading the most in Metro Detroit communities, according to our local doctors and hospitals.

WAYNE COUNTY -– Respiratory viruses, RSV, influenza, strep throat, adenovirus, Covid.

Dr. Christopher Loewe, Ascension St. John:

“It’s been very busy in the emergency department. I’m seeing children with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Infection, Influenza and Strep Throat. I’m seeing adults with Adenovirus and COVID-19. Most Adenovirus infections are mild with a few symptoms. Symptoms may include runny nose, sore throat, fever, and cough. It’s important to wash your hands and scrub for at least 20 seconds.”

Dr. Glen Clark, Emergency Center Chief, Corewell Health’s Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe:

“We are seeing a significant increase in viral respiratory cases, many of which are related to RSV. We are also seeing some increase in influenza A and COVID cases.”

Candace Wooten, FNP-BC, MinuteClinic nurse practitioner:

“COVID remains persistent amongst all the counties. Influenza A has also arrived. There were multiple cases seen at our Grosse Pointe MinuteClinic and a few others at the rest of our local clinics.”

OAKLAND COUNTY -– RSV, mononucleosis, influenza, Covid, hand foot & mouth disease, strep throat.

Dr. David Donaldson, Chief of Emergency Center, Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital:

“In terms of infections, we are seeing a lot of RSV and mono in both adults and peds. There has also been a number of individuals coming in for mental health reasons, something we usually see an uptick in around the holidays.”

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital Emergency Department:

“We are seeing a lot of pain of all varieties and respiratory issues.”

WASHTENAW COUNTY -– Covid, upper respiratory viruses, sore throats, influenza, stomach viruses.

Dr. Brad Uren, Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Michigan Medicine:

“Seeing a good amount of covid and other upper respiratory symptoms. Some viral URIs with severe sore throats. Some people with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea but at a relatively low level.”

Washtenaw County Health Department:

“Influenza cases in Washtenaw County residents appear to be increasing. Most Influenza cases being reported in Washtenaw County are Influenza A. Sporadic cases of Influenza B are being reported. Flu-related hospitalizations of Washtenaw residents are currently at low levels. Sporadic hospitalizations are being reported.”

MONROE COUNTY –- Covid, stomach viruses, respiratory viruses, sore throats.

MACOMB COUNTY –- Upper respiratory infections, asthma flare-ups, influenza, stomach viruses, sinus infections, pink eye.

Dr. Ali Saad, Emergency physician at McLaren Macomb:

“While not testing positive for the flu or COVID-19, viral upper respiratory infections are the most common cause for patients to seek care in the emergency department with symptoms of fever, cough, and congestion. Asthma-suffers have experienced a worsening of their symptoms following viral upper respiratory infections. Fever, body aches, and general fatigue have been the most common symptoms of influenza, which has seen a slight uptick in cases. There remains a low but steady volume of viral gastroenteritis cases, which cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.”
