A 28-year-old man from Detroit has been charged with fleeing police after an attempted traffic stop.

The incident occurred on Thursday (Dec. 14) when Sterling Heights police attempted a traffic stop on Aaquil Dejuan Cleary.

Officials say Cleary fled from police in a residential neighborhood near 15 Mile Road.

Police say they pursued the 28-year-old man, which ended in a cul de sac where an officer where an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Cleary was charged in Sterling Heights District Court, where he received a $100,000 cash bond with no 10%. If he is released, Cleary must wear a GPS tether.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Wednesday (Dec. 27) at 8:30 a.m., and a preliminary exam is scheduled for Wednesday (Jan. 3, 2024) at 1:30 p.m.

“I would like to thank the Michigan State Police for their continued investigation into this incident,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. “My office takes gun cases very seriously and will hold those accountable for their actions.”
