Detroit police officer charged in fatal assault of 71-year-old man

Juwan Marquise-Alexander Brown, 29, charged with manslaughter

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Detroit police officer Juwan Marquise-Alexander Brown, 29, with the fatal assault of Daryl Vance, 71.

The incident occurred on Sept. 1 at 6:50 p.m. in front of a bowling alley in the 4100 block of Woodward Avenue in Detroit because Vance, according to reports, was disorderly.

Officials say Brown was called to the location, and it is alleged that a verbal confrontation between him and Vance escalated, causing the 29-year-old to punch Vance in the face and hit his head on the pavement as he fell to the ground.

EMS arrived on the scene and transported the 71-year-old man to a Metro Detroit hospital for treatment, where he remained until he succumbed to his injuries on Sept. 21.

Brown was charged with manslaughter, a 15-year felony.

“Police officers frequently deal with citizens who are disorderly and verbally unpleasant,” said Worthy. “But the evidence in this case shows that the officer allegedly was the aggressor, and his actions went criminally beyond what was necessary in this situation. This behavior cannot be tolerated from our law enforcement.”

Brown is expected to be arraigned on Dec. 20 at 10:30 a.m. in the 36th District Court.

“Mr. Brown has been terminated from the Detroit Police Department as a result of his actions on September 1, 2023. However, Mr. Brown is exercising his contractual right to appeal the termination decision. During the pendency of an appeal, if sought, Mr. Brown will remain off DPD payroll and will not possess any law enforcement authority.

The DPD thanks the Wayne County Prosecutors Office for their work on this matter. The DPD will cooperate fully with Prosecutor Worthy’s efforts toward obtaining a conviction for the charged offenses.”
