DETROIT – Lithium-ion batteries caught fire at GM Factory ZERO on Detroit’s east side.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday (Dec. 19) in the 2500 block of East Grand Boulevard, caused the cancellation of the second shift.
General Motors shut down production after some lithium-ion batteries sparked near the loading dock of the four-point-five million square foot facility.
Detroit Fire Department Chief James Harris said it was a three-alarm fire at one point just for manpower.
Officials say there were no injuries to the GM workers or the firefighters who attended the blaze.
Harris said firefighters were hosed down when they came out of the building as a precaution.
According to GM’s website, about 1,880 people work at the factory, producing the GMC Hummer all-electric pickup, SUV, and the Chevy Silverado E-V work truck.
GM spokeswoman Tara Kuhnen says all employees are safe and that the company is “Investigating the situation and will share more details once available.
Officials say the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
