Police officer charged with manslaughter after bowling alley incident on Detroit’s east side

Juwan Marquise-Alexander Brown, 29, charged with manslaughter

DETROIT – Detroit police officer Juwan Marquise Alexander Brown, 29, was dispatched to the Garden Bowl in Midtown on Sept. 1.

The bowling alley called for help because of a 71-year-old customer who was refusing to leave, causing problems, and there were concerns he was armed.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is charging Brown with manslaughter after what happened next.

Worthy says the officer became the aggressor. Brown got the 71-year-old man out of the bowling alley and then allegedly punched him in the face, which caused him to fall to the ground and hit his head.

He died 20 days later. The medical examiner says it’s blunt force trauma to the head that killed him.

Brown is expected to be arraigned Dec. 20 in 36th District Court. The police department released a statement late Tuesday (Dec. 19).

“Mr. Brown has been terminated from the Detroit Police Department as a result of his actions on Sept. 1, 2023. However, Mr. Brown is exercising his contractual right to appeal the termination decision. During the pendency of an appeal, if sought, Mr. Brown will remain off DPD payroll and will not possess any law enforcement authority.”

The Detroit Police Department thanks the Wayne County Prosecutors Office for their work on this matter. The DPD will cooperate fully with Prosecutor Worthy’s efforts toward obtaining a conviction for the charged offenses.”
