Harper Woods shooting prompts lockdowns, hospitalizes woman

Shooting was not school-related, police say

HARPER WOODS, Mich. – Police in Harper Woods are investigating a shooting that hospitalized a woman Thursday, Dec. 21.

The shooting happened at about 8 a.m. near the intersection of Woodcrest Street and Lansdowne Avenue. The shooting prompted several nearby schools to go into lockdown as a precaution.

Police said they were called to an area near the intersection of Kelly Road and Woodland Street, where they found a woman inside a vehicle who had been shot.

Police went to a home they believed the suspect could have been hiding in. A special response team made entry to the home, but they did not locate the suspect.

Residents were urged to shelter-in-place as they searched for the suspect.

The woman and the suspect are believed to have known each other and the shooting was not a random act.

The suspect has not been taken into custody.

Police insisted the shooting was not school-related, but that the lockdown was standard procedure. They added there was a lot of false information shared online and they want to emphasize the shooting was not school-related.

The school lockdowns were lifted at about 12:10 p.m.
