DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. – The city of Dearborn Heights knew it wanted to offer children who had a rough year a little fun at Christmas.
So, the city turned to the school districts to come up with two dozen deserving children who have had a challenging 2023.
They got their letters telling them they’d be picked and to arrive at the Target on Ford Road Friday (Dec. 22) night for pizza, Santa Claus, and a Dearborn Heights police officer or firefighter to go through the store and pick out presents with them.
Terry Hines’ son Bradley, who has autism, was one of those that were chosen.
“All of a sudden, we got this letter saying that he’s been randomly selected, and it’s just an emotional thing,” said Hines.
The family lost many things in their home this year due to an infestation and has been drowning in bills to get set up again.
“To be able to see him having fun and picking things out and to watch him smile, it’s such a blessing,” Hines said.
Bradley was paired with officer Ahmad Mazloun, who was terrific with him.
The department has had training on how to best help those who are neurodivergent.
