DETROIT – The Gordie Howe International Bridge opening has been delayed until fall 2025.
Construction was originally expected to be completed in November of this year, with the bridge opening by the end of the year. The opening has been delayed nearly a year, with construction expected to be completed in September 2025 and the bridge opening that fall.
“After a three-year pandemic and considering the size and complexity of the Gordie Howe International Bridge project, our project team is pleased that the impact to the construction schedule is limited to only 10 months beyond the original contracted completion date and that we could agree on a reasonable adjustment to the contract value,” Charl van Niekerk, CEO, Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, said.
Construction on the bridge officially began in 2018. Over 2022 and 2023, workers made progress on bridge and road deck construction, stay cable installation, and port of entry facilities.
This year, workers are expected to connect the bridge deck over the Detroit River and install the last of the 216 stay cables. POE agency buildings and concrete for I-17 ramps will also be completed. When construction is complete, the team will test and prepare the bridge for traffic.
