DETROIT – The new Grand River Bridge over I-94 is completed, but construction barriers are still up in Detroit.
The barriers have become a source of frustration for drivers on the city’s west side, but officials told Local 4 that it will open soon.
The fresh, new, and finished Grand River bridge over I-94 is still not open, and drivers are left to ponder why.
Drivers say they would like to finally end the detours around it and get the Grand River flowing again.
Dianne Cross from the Michigan Department of Transportation described what was causing the delays.
“The 60-year-old bridge is built at an angle, so that angle over I-94 requires more bridge supports, more concrete, and there’s had to be more design time and even build time because the bridge is a little more unusual,” said Cross.
The Grand River Bridge is finsihed but not open and in fact MDOT hoped the bridge would be finished and open last spring.
The delay from the bridge is not the reason why other major ramps in the region are closed down like the Lodge Freeway to westbound I-94.
MDOT is keeping traffic from driving into other construction zones and workers who are doing similar bridge work in the area.
“We are hoping to have it open in the next few weeks or so,” Cross said.
