1 killed in head-on, fiery crash on I-696 in Farmington Hills

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – A person was killed in a head-on crash along I-696 early Monday morning in Farmington Hills.

The fatal crash happened on westbound I-696 near Drake Road around 2 a.m. on Monday morning, according to the Farmington Hills Police Department.

The crash involved two vehicles. Police said their preliminary investigation shows a person driving a BMW X3 was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-696, crashing into a box truck traveling westbound.

After the crash, both vehicles slid into a ditch on the north side of the freeway and burst into flames.

The driver of the BMW was killed in the crash. The driver of the box truck was not injured. Due to the extent of injury to the driver of the BMW, identification is pending.

Investigators of the Farmington Hills Police Traffic Safety Section are actively investigating this crash. Anyone with information pertaining to this crash is asked to please contact the Farmington Hills Police Department at (248) 871-2610.
