DETROIT – Will the Detroit Lions go all the way this year? Well, even if they don’t, they only have to win their first playoff appearance on Saturday in order for you to get some free pizza out of it.

The rejuvenated team finished the regular season Sunday with a 30-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings -- bringing their season win count to 12 for the first time since 1991. Detroit’s team is now preparing to begin their playoff run against the Los Angeles Rams at Ford Field on Sunday, Jan. 14.

It’s not only the first-ever Lions playoff game to take place at home at Ford Field in three decades -- the team will also be facing off against their former quarterback, Matthew Stafford.

Should the Lions be victorious again this Sunday, Detroit-style pizza staple Shield’s will be offering free pies to dine-in customers. If the Lions win, Shield’s locations in Detroit, Southfield and Troy will give away free pizzas from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Here’s how it’ll work:

  • Free pizzas will be available to dine-in guests only.
  • Groups of one or two customers will get one small pizza with one topping. Groups of three or more customers will get one large pizza with one topping.
  • Extra toppings will still be available for their usual price.
  • The offer is only available for guests who don’t have a reservation. Customers who booked reservations beforehand will not be eligible to participate.
  • Drinks are not included. Officials encourage customers to tip “based on the original cost of the pizza.”

“The fans have been waiting for a long time for a winning team and this could be the year the Lions go to the Super Bowl,” said Paul Andoni of Shield’s. “We’re glad to show our loyalty by giving away free pizza to celebrate their season and a home playoff victory. This could be the start of a new Detroit dynasty!”

Shield’s isn’t the only Detroit staple getting into the spirit. On Monday, Jan. 8, the downtown Spirit of Detroit statue was outfitted with a blue Lions jersey to recognize the team as it gears up for the postseason.
