Man responsible for fatal DUI crash in Warren while out on bond sentenced

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – A 37-year-old man from Lincoln Park is going to spend at least 30 years in prison for a drunk driving crash that killed a man in Warren.

The crash happened Jan. 21, 2023. According to authorities, Demetrius Benson was driving westbound on 8 Mile Road when he ran a redlight, striking the driver’s side of a southbound vehicle on Groesbeck Highway. The driver of the southbound vehicle was taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Benson reportedly fled the scene and attempted to carjack another person, but was dragged and ran over by the vehicle.

At the time of the incident, Benson was reportedly out on bond for driving while intoxicated.

Benson was sentenced Wednesday, Jan. 10, to 30 to 88 years in prison on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death, driving while license suspended causing death, attempted carjacking, possession of a controlled substance and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated 3rd offense.
