NOVI, Mich. – Emagine Theatres will not hold viewing parties for the Detroit Lions playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams after all.
The company was set to welcome Lions fans to theaters for Sunday Night Football as Detroit welcomes Matthew Stafford back for the wildcard round.
But apparently the NFL had other ideas.
“At the request of the NFL, Emagine is prohibited from hosting its planned viewing party at our locations,” Emagine Theatres posted on Facebook. “We apologize to our guests.”
Emagine said Wednesday that fans across Southeast Michigan would be able to watch the game for free in their theaters. But then the NFL highlighted some licensing issues, and the event was shut down.
A local realtor who was offering to swap jerseys for any Lions fan with a Stafford jersey has also been told to shutter his event.
The Lions and Rams will broadcast Sunday night on Local 4 News, with coverage starting at 6:30 p.m.
